You Gotta Do What You Gotta Do

My dream of an Obama presidency is growing dimmer by the hour. Like Obama, I'm undergoing something of a Clinton education in smear and distort politics. From today's Wall Street Journal:

One of our favorite Bill Clinton anecdotes involves a confrontation he had with Bob Dole in the Oval Office after the 1996 election. Mr. Dole protested Mr. Clinton's attack ads claiming the Republican wanted to harm Medicare, but the President merely smiled that Bubba grin and said, "You gotta do what you gotta do."

The only positive thing about this whole Hillary campagin is that Democrats/Progressives/Liberals are suddenly discovering that the Clintons have a problem with "factually inaccurate" statements. When the barrel of the gun is turned against a friendly face, suddenly it becomes apparent that maybe they don't always tell the truth. I'm enjoying the backlash, but I believe everyone will fall into line when actually confronted with the possibilty of pulling the lever for the GOP.

I now consider the Clintons to be the Democratic version of Karl Rove. A pox on both their houses.

"Factually inaccurate" statements like, say, "nobody could've anticipated that the levees would break"? Or maybe "I never said Saddam was a grave threat"? Or perhaps "I will fire anyone who was involved outing Valerie Plame."

George Bush also has a problem telling the truth. That's a given. How does that excuse Bill Clinton? Shouldn't we hold both parties to a high standard? It's important to be philosophically consistent in our criticisms, otherwise we're all partisan hacks.
