If you're unsure what to make of the ongoing writer's strike in Hollywood, the scribes' for The Office have made a pretty entertaining video discussing their position:

In the meantime, maybe someone can explain to me the utility of mandatory picketing for members of the guild?

Mandatory picketing is to give an idea of how many people are part of the guild, I suppose. You're part of a union, you gotta show support. Membership is a privelege, that comes with many benefits, you union hater. Kinda like if you have a job, you gotta show up to work every day.
Woah, Toby looks fat.

I don't hate unions, I just don't understand the utility of picketing a movie studio. For example, I understand why disgruntled deliverymen picket outside Saigon Grill on University Place - so people like me won't order lunch and dinner there. But I'm sort of lost as to why the WGA would require its members to picket, except for solidarity purposes. It's not like the news media won't pick up on the story or viewers won't notice that there's no new TV to watch. (Speaking of which, I'm personally having nightmares and cold sweats knowing the new season of LOST may be further delayed).

The union was outside of my office yesterday (picketing Law & Order) but also ended up picketing CSTV - even though we don't have any WGA members working here... The giant rat was outside my door too.

I don't know how I feel about this. I think the writers should be compensated for their work that goes up on the internets, but at the same time, I wouldn't have a job were it not for posting said work on the internets and cellphones. And I'm pretty sure I make a lot less money than WGA members.

I guess I wish I had a union.
